Preparing for the Future: MFVFD Get Ready for Hybrid, Electric Vehicle, & Lithium-Ion Incidents

August 23, 2023

Over the past couple of weeks, Lieutenant Scagnelli has been busy putting together multiple trainings focusing on Hybrid, Electric Vehicle, & Lithium-Ion Incidents. As the road evolves, so do the vehicles we encounter, and we need to stay prepared.

Did you know that there are differences between Hybrid and EV vehicles? Hybrids combine a traditional engine with an electric motor, while EVs run purely on electricity! Understanding the differences helps us react effectively in emergencies.

During the trainings our members focused on:

- How to identify these vehicles quickly and efficiently.
- How to immobilize such vehicles. Cutting all power is crucial. Knowing where to disconnect batteries ensures safety for everyone involved.
- Firefighter Safety during the Initial response.
- Size Up and situation assessment —battery location, potential hazards, and safe approach areas.

This knowledge guides us to make informed decisions under pressure.

These types of drills take a lot of organizing and help from our community. We would like to thank Lieutenant Scagnelli for his dedication and time spent putting these trainings together.

We would also like to give a Special Shoutout to Co Owner & Instructor Jason Rivera from North East Squad Concepts in New Haven for leading our enlightening Lithium-Ion training. His expertise is invaluable!

Also, gratitude to owners, sales staff and mechanical specialists at Park Ford in Mahopac & Curry Subaru in Mohegan Lake for providing vehicles and sending their EV specialists to guide us. Their support helps us serve our community better!

We are always looking for motivated individuals to join our department.

Membership applications are accepted anytime, however, potential member applications are processed four times a year. To find out more, please visit https://www.mahopacfallsvfd.com/content/join/
