| Our members utilized our regular Wednesday night training to familiarize themselves with the operations of our extrication tools and procedures.
When firefighters arrive on the scene of a motor vehicle accident, they have to work and think quickly. First, they must think of their safety as well as the safety of the people inside the vehicles. If they have bad injuries, they can’t be jostled around so we must stabilize the car.
Once the vehicle has been stabilized, we check where the airbags are and if they have been deployed. If we cut into one, it could explode causing more injuries. Some modern cars have a lot of airbags so this can delay getting the doors open.
Thankfully extrication calls are not an everyday occurrence in The Falls, so practice is key to keeping our members fresh and up to date.
Regular training helps further familiarization with our equipment and procedures, allowing for seamless operations on the scene of a call. This creates a more effective environment for the officers, firefighters, and EMTs on scene. |
