Last night the Ant Hill Mob loaded up the trucks and made our way to the Putnam County Fire Training Center located on Gypsy Trail Road. Upon arrival, members were split into 3 groups and rotated between the 3 training scenarios set up by Lieutenant Norton.

The first scenario was the roof simulator which was taught by Lieutenant Scagnelli. Lt Scagnelli went over our various tools, their practical uses, and when each tool should be used. Then members went over the basics of starting the equipment, as well as how to sound a roof and the correct cutting procedure to vent a roof safely. Once members were comfortable, they proceeded onto the roof simulator where they practiced safe ways to vent the roof.

The second scenario was mask confidence taught by Lieutenant Dwyer. The mask confidence course is a great way for members to get comfortable with removing their Scott Air-Pak and navigating their way through various obstacles while blindfolded.

Thirdly, members went into a smoke-filled building to practice our Search and Rescue techniques taught by Lieutenant Ward. Members were split into teams of 2 and spread their search over the 2 levels. This drill is extremely important as members are able to practice their search and rescue skills, as well as proper radio etiquette all while in smokey conditions that make it almost impossible to see.

Wednesdays are our weekly training, and we encourage all members to attend in order to refine and refresh their skills. The weekly drills responsibilities are rotated between our Lieutenants, so each week is something new for our members to practice.
